Headaches After a Car Accident in Miami: Causes, Types, and Chiropractic Treatment
Post-traumatic headaches are one of the most common — and most disruptive — symptoms after a car accident. Learn what causes them and how chiropractic care at a Miami accident clinic can help.
Headaches are among the most common symptoms reported after a car accident — and among the most frequently dismissed. Many accident victims assume their post-crash headaches are stress-related or will resolve on their own. Some do. But many are a sign of underlying injury that, without treatment, can become a chronic, debilitating condition.
If you have developed headaches after a car accident in Miami, here is what you need to know.
Types of Headaches After a Car Accident
Not all post-accident headaches are the same. Understanding the type of headache you are experiencing helps guide appropriate treatment.
Cervicogenic Headaches
Cervicogenic headaches originate in the cervical spine — the neck. They are caused by dysfunction in the joints, muscles, or nerves of the upper cervical spine (C1–C3), which refer pain upward into the head.
These headaches typically:
- Begin at the base of the skull and radiate forward toward the forehead, temple, or eye
- Are felt on one side of the head (unilateral)
- Are accompanied by neck pain and restricted range of motion
- Worsen with certain neck positions or movements
- May be accompanied by nausea, dizziness, or sensitivity to light
Cervicogenic headaches are extremely common after whiplash injuries because the upper cervical joints and muscles are among the structures most commonly damaged in rear-end collisions. They respond very well to chiropractic care.
Post-Traumatic Tension Headaches
Post-traumatic tension headaches are caused by sustained muscle tension in the neck, shoulders, and scalp following a car accident. The muscles of the upper trapezius, suboccipital region, and temporalis are commonly involved.
These headaches typically feel like a tight band or pressure around the head and are often bilateral (both sides). They are frequently triggered or worsened by stress, poor posture, and prolonged sitting — all of which are common in the aftermath of a car accident.
Post-Concussion Headaches
If your head struck the steering wheel, window, headrest, or airbag during the collision, you may have sustained a concussion — even if you did not lose consciousness. Post-concussion headaches are one of the hallmark symptoms of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI).
Post-concussion headaches can resemble migraines (throbbing, unilateral, with nausea and light sensitivity) or tension headaches. They are often accompanied by other concussion symptoms including cognitive fog, difficulty concentrating, memory problems, sleep disturbance, and irritability.
If you suspect a concussion, it is important to be evaluated by a healthcare provider promptly. At MedStar Chiropractic, we screen all car accident patients for concussion symptoms and coordinate referrals to neurologists when indicated.
Occipital Neuralgia
Occipital neuralgia is caused by irritation or injury to the occipital nerves — the nerves that run from the upper cervical spine through the scalp. It produces sharp, shooting, or electric-shock-like pain in the back of the head, scalp, and behind the eyes.
This condition is less common than cervicogenic or tension headaches but can be extremely painful and disabling. It often develops after whiplash injuries that damage the upper cervical soft tissues surrounding the occipital nerves.
Why Post-Accident Headaches Should Not Be Ignored
Many car accident victims take over-the-counter pain relievers for their headaches and wait for them to resolve. This approach has two significant problems.
First, pain medication addresses the symptom — the headache — without addressing the underlying cause. If your headaches are caused by cervical joint dysfunction, muscle spasm, or nerve irritation, no amount of ibuprofen will correct those structural problems. The headaches will continue, and the underlying injury will progress.
Second, chronic use of pain medication for headaches can itself cause headaches. Medication overuse headache (MOH), also called rebound headache, develops when pain relievers are used more than 10–15 days per month. This creates a vicious cycle that is difficult to break.
The appropriate treatment for post-accident headaches addresses the structural causes — and that is where chiropractic care excels.
How Chiropractic Care Treats Post-Accident Headaches
At MedStar Chiropractic in Miami Westchester, our approach to post-accident headaches begins with identifying the specific type and underlying cause. Treatment is then tailored accordingly.
Cervical chiropractic adjustments are highly effective for cervicogenic headaches. By restoring proper alignment and movement to the upper cervical joints, adjustments reduce the joint dysfunction that refers pain into the head. Multiple clinical trials have demonstrated that spinal manipulation is more effective than medication for cervicogenic headaches.
Suboccipital release is a gentle soft tissue technique that addresses the small muscles at the base of the skull — a common source of cervicogenic and tension headaches after whiplash.
Trigger point therapy deactivates the myofascial trigger points in the upper trapezius, sternocleidomastoid, and temporalis muscles that contribute to tension and referred headache pain.
Cervical traction decompresses the upper cervical joints and nerve roots, providing relief for patients with occipital neuralgia and cervicogenic headaches caused by nerve compression.
Postural correction addresses the forward head posture that develops after cervical injury and perpetuates headache-generating muscle tension.
